On Sunday afternoons, for 23 minutes each week, I dream of you.

‘Hey honey won’t you come with me
I will get you everything you need
But you must go on a fully fledged riot
With all the screens and sofas flying
Yes you’re going to have to leave it all behind’

In the interests of preserving optimism, when it seemd to be diminishing rapidly.

You make me smile in a very special way :)

Is there solace in silence?

I sat in a seminar on Refugee health and outcomes today. It was horrifyingly truthful. Lack of sanitation, lack of identity, loss of culture, of family and of safety are all compounded by what seems to be a prevailing factor: Sexual violence.

The terrifying thing is, 1 in 3 women in Australia are victims of violence. That’s a lot of people that simply aren’t talking. They aren’t saying anything because they feel voiceless. They aren’t talking.

And it’s something I’ve thought about a lot over the past few months. This lack of communicating the truth when it most needs to be spoken. There are these millions, even billions of women and children who have no choice but to stay silent. They represent a huge problem. They represent the need for reform. Mao once said that women hold up half the sky, and I think that’s truer today than it ever has been.

Women’s health is something I’m passionate about, something that I’ve felt strongly for even before I discovered Paediatrics. It’s something that can get a fire burning in my stomach, even when I’m at my lowest. I think the best way to address issues we have is to empower ordinary women to see the potential they have. Ordinary women like you or me.

My friend and I realised, female medical students spend a stupid proportion of their time worrying about their future marriages, relationships, children, career prospects. We worry and talk and complain that there’s no way we’ll be able to do it. That it’s a cruel timeframe. It is, I suppose. It isn’t fair. But what is? And rather than facing our lives head on, we’ve become bogged down in this inane chatter.

The power we have to create change is so much bigger. And let’s face it, we’re type A, neurotic personalities that should learn to leave a little to fate. It’s overstated but not understood, there are millions who would want our position. So we should make it count.

I’ll end tonight with a song. Sid Sriram is an impressive young man. I have so much respect for anyone who has the audacity and courage to run after their dreams. Amanda, you’re a beautiful example.

I feel stuck and hopeless, but I’ll wake up tomorrow and put on a brave face and pretty dress even if it kills me.
